The folks and I had a great time this weekend. Highlights included wandering around downtown Seattle, re-discovering Carkeek Park in north Seattle (my mom and dad's favorite park from when Dad was at the UW in the early 80s), and dinner at La Boucherie on Vashon Island. Oh my gosh, dinner at La Boucherie...
A gastronomic review...
To begin with, La Boucherie is a wonderful fine-dining restaurant (we're talking white table cloths and white napkins) located in an adorable and quaint converted house right off the main strip on Vashon Island. Dinner options included a seasonal 3-course or 6-course Prix Fixe menu, or your choice of individual menu items. All of the food on the menu is local, most of it coming from the owners' sustainable farm located not too far away on the island, which boasts of all organic veggies and grass-fed meat. The beautifully diverse menu is complimented by an extensive list of house-made wines and other Northwest wines, ciders, and beers.
My folks and I went with the 6-course menu and were treated to a dining experience unlike any other we had ever had before. A delicious, perfectly-sized dish of goodness arrived at our place setting approximately every half hour, starting with Pork Rillets, homemade mustard, and bread and ending gracefully with fresh peaches and homemade cream complimented by a (warm!) homemade rosemary shortbread cookie. The series of six dishes spread out over about three hours made for relaxing dining and a different kind of appreciation for this special meal. Not only was every dish delicious enough to excite "mmmmm"s and "oh wow"s from all three of us, but you could really feel the passion and effort that the owners put into their food and into their work. All in all, the service and the food were the best and most genuine I believe I've ever experienced, and I sincerely hope to return to try a menu from every season of the year. An advanced reservation is definitely recommended. The earlier in the evening the better, in my opinion; that way you can linger and enjoy the food all night, but not be too late to take a ferry back to Seattle. In any case, you will leave neither hungry nor stuffed, but filled to the most perfect degree. If the typical 'star' rating system only goes up to five, I would venture to give La Boucherie six stars for sure.
